There have been several monographs of garden designers' work published recently, but this one from Isabel and Julian Bannerman is something a bit different, as you might expect from the creative, bohemian pair. Beautifully written by Isabel, the book reads like a diary, beginning in their childhoods. What unites them is their passion for crumbling houses and wild, forgotten gardens with a 'dreamy, left-alone quality'. A sense of fairy tale defines all their projects, whether a secret, scented dell or a romantic ruin, and this quest for the ultimate garden utopia has become their life's work. Included in the book are projects large and small, from their 1994 Gold Medalwinning Chelsea garden to the Highgrove stumpery (HRH the Prince of Wales has written the foreword to this book), culminating in their own much loved gardens at Hanham Court and, most recently, Trematon Castle in Cornwall (shown in the December 2015 issue of House & Garden).Designed by their friend Dunstan Baker from the Fine Art Print Company, the book is llustrated with their own photographs and drawings, giving it a personal, intimate appeal.
